I've never spoken to anyone who had anything other than positive words to say about Papi's. In fact, I've spoken to a few people who say this is their favourite restaurant in Cabarete. By reputation, I was expecting something special when I went to Papi’s for the first time.I was severely under-whelmed. I was dining on my own. I was looking at my menu already when a large group of people arrived and where given menus. Being alone, not surprisingly I was ready to order before the large group but the staff weren’t interested in my solo order. In fact, the large group placed their food order before the waiter returned to me. Not to worry, this is the Dominican Republic, I wasn’t in a rush. And besides, I was in for a treat, this was, I reminded myself, according to many, the best restaurant on the beach. When it eventually arrived, it was average at best but at a price that was well above average. I left feeling that I’d had nothing special and paid over the odds for it. When I spoke with other people, they convinced me, this must have been a one off. With this in mind, the next time I was in Cabarete, I thought I’d give it another go. This time, I had an average meal, for above average price… Hmm... After this second visit, I was told that Papi’s is best known for their lobster. So may be they simply aren’t that good at pasta (which I had on both occasions)? Or perhaps Papi’s is a ‘social’ restaurant, where it is best to eat as part of a group, the whole atmosphere being part of the whole meal, something I missed by being on my own on both occasions? Perhaps they simply struggle to cater for a solo diner, rather than couples or groups? Whatever the reason, my experience of Papi’s hasn’t been good on either occasion and with so many really good places available, I couldn’t recommend this establishment to others, even if many people do.
