Voy Voy

Over the last few trips to Cabarete, Voy Voy has pretty much become my location choice of place to go for a beer.
Relaxed, fun and friendly. I just hope they've hit upon their wining combination of food to sell, because every time I go there, I have to re-write this web page! From Thai-food Thursday, advertised on lying lamp-posts to really special 'specials' they’ve finally arrived at what may well be that wining combination… Dominican food!

Dominican food? That’s just chicken, rice & beans isn’t it?
Well, not according to Aunt Clara and her trusted cookbook, the basis for Voy Voy’s newest menu.

More about the food later, first, the bar. Heart of windsurf land during the day, cool bar by night. Folk mainly late 20’s, 30’s and early 40’s are attracted here. A fair selection of cheap drinks during certain times (like ‘free’ if you happen to be a girl and it happens to be a Thursday night). Charlie’s a nice guy who’ll chat with anyone… even me. Sangueta is obviously the sensible one of the partnership!
Upstairs there is a table-football and a dartboard for that ‘pub feel’.

That and the great range of music that is played, make this a great spot to head for even if you just want a few drinks.

Happy Hour, buy one, get one free. It's that easy.

Back to the food. I took my new friend, a fellow lone traveller, to try out the Dominican menu. I went for the Dominican style fish, Cecilia, being Swedish, decided to avoid the meatballs and chose… the chicken, rice & beans!

Starter for two... not on the menu (yet!) We've already tucked into it and the photo doesn't do it justice.

We had a selection of starters which were fantastic. As a ‘selection’ it doesn’t appear on the menu, which is a shame because it is a good introduction to Dominican starters. Perhaps when Charlie reads this, he’ll work a way on to the menu for a ‘mixed starter’ for two? If it does appear when they re-print menus, then my advice is go for it.

The fish was not bad but it wasn’t a patch on the chicken, which was excellent. Yes, it is basic food but it is good basic food.

Voy Voy is slightly further out than the main bars but it’s well worth leaving the bright lights of the main bars for something a little different.
