Don't get me wrong. I am not an MBI supporter or an Archer admirer. I am just trying to understand local politics, and deciding if a Town council is a good idea. I have a vote.
To be honest I don't remember the MBI ever putting out a manifesto. At the 1999 elections they won with a negative campaign of just slagging off Labour over Blobby. In 2007 their leaflets really didn't tell much except they were local and cared about Morecambe more than anything else.
So let's assume their core policy is:
Improving Morecambe as a tourist resort
From 1999-2003:
- They shut down the world music festival while in power
- They backed and approved plans for an ALDI on Morecambe prom on a key site for tourist regeneration
- They failed to invest in new festivals, infrastructure or anything tourist related
From 2003-07
- They opposed the only sustainable and cost-effective bypass route to Morecambe thus blocking improved access to the town for tourists
- They consistently opposed plans by the Lab-LD-Green coalition that actually led to Morecambe's rejuvenation
From 2007 to now
- They've saved The Dome. Well its hardly an improvement. The impact is over £200K to be covered by local taxpayers, which has been funded by cutting playground maintenance, children's holiday activities, swimming pool closures and cuts in grant to Citzens Advice Bureaux
- Put forward a 'business plan' for The Winter Gardens that is highly dependent on public money not just to get the work done but cover its running costs, which is lamentable, nit just in the current climate but at any time.
I would urge any MBI member or supporter to provide one major success in improving Morecambe as a tourist destination since 1999. They've had six years in power and four as the largest party in Morecambe so come on then...
